Feeling excited, but maybe a bit nervous, about your first transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) session? We understand that taking a new treatment path represents a big change in your life, so at Northern Medical Center, we’re ready to put you at ease so you can reap the benefits of this groundbreaking treatment for depression.
Our team of board-certified doctors specializes in customized mental health care for each patient in our Middletown, NY, office. We’re proud to use the state-of-the-art NeuroStar® system, one of the leading approaches for depression that doesn’t respond to traditional approaches like medication. In this blog, we’re explaining how TMS works and tell you what you can expect during your first NeuroStar session so you can head into treatment feeling confident.
TMS Setup
You sit comfortably in a chair, and our specialist positions a cushioned magnetic coil shaped like a figure 8 atop your head. It rests lightly on your head and is completely painless.
TMS Treatment
The NeuroStar coils emit magnetic impulses that target the parts of the brain involved in depression. They travel to the exact area where depression occurs, at the ideal depth within the brain, based on your personal brain mapping.
NeuroStar TMS is so successful because it hones in on the parts of the brain that are underactive in people with depression. The impulses travel through brain circuits, repairing lost connections and reinforcing weak ones. This helps your brain develop new, healthier thought patterns to replace depressive thoughts.
During impulses, you may feel a mild tapping sensation. Some patients experience a light tingling in their scalp, but the treatment is comfortable overall. You can watch videos, listen to music, read, or close your eyes and rest during treatment, whatever makes you feel comfortable!
Treatment sessions are just 20 minutes each.
What Comes Next With TMS Therapy
After your first treatment session, you can resume normal activities immediately.
We typically schedule sessions on weekdays (five days a week) for six weeks. Afterward, you’ll have six treatments, spaced apart, before completing treatment.
Many patients start feeling better within a few weeks. NeuroStar studies show a remarkable 83% response rate — and 62% of patients achieved remission long-term.
